FEBRUARY: STUDENT OF THE MONTH

WOMEN HISTORY MONTH

March is Women's History Month,an annual declared month that highlights the contribution of women to events in history and contemporary society. March 8th is International Womens Day, a global holiday to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women's right movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.

This month, students taking Spanish worked on a project and presentation to commemorate the work of profound women in history by creating a mural. Students chose a woman from their own culture that has made a difference in the world, highlighting their accomplishments. Some of the women they chose were Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Park, Sandra Cisneros Las Hermanas Mirabal, Frida Kahlo, and Ellen Ochoa, to mention a few. Students also identified a woman in their family that they admired for all they do. Ms. Castillo and her students enjoyed working on this project as it represented students' identity and recognition for impactful contributions made in society by women.

HIGHLIGHT OF MARCH

In commemoration of Womens history month, Ms. Martin and Ms. Santos decorated their classroom door to pay ode and honor women who have contributed to the uplifting of Womens history.

JANUARY: STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Scholar of the Month: November 2021 (Rebecca Miralrio)

The New Jewish Home: Geriatrics Career Development and Health Care Explorers Program

Health Care Explorations Program has been a big part in my preparation for my career in the medical field. It has also helped my professional development tremendously. My favorite components of the program have to be SAT preparation and Skills. I probably would not have been able to get SAT prep from a professional without HCE. I would have to go through the process of preparing for one of the most important tests of my life by myself. The skills component has given me an idea of what to expect in our Certified Nursing Assistant course and test. Before graduating HCE I hope to be a CNA and with the skills component, I am sure I will accomplish that. Although being on zoom for some days is not ideal, the HCE staff constantly ensures we are engaged and having fun while learning.

Scholar of the Month: July 2021 (Gerys Nzambo)

THE NEW JEWISH HOME: GERIATRICS CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH CARE EXPLORERS PROGRAM

The first day of the summer program was July 6, 2021. I was given a schedule, but I still didn’t know what to expect. It’s been 20 days since the first day and I still don’t know what to expect from myself and other participants. The unpredictability of the HCE summer program is what I enjoy most. Some days it’s awkward because the majority of us participants are shy and scared to share our voices. Other days, we got into debatable discussions based on various topics. I never know how the program will be, that’s what makes it enjoyable. During the HCE summer program, I’ve learned to be mindful of others and their beliefs. What I believe to be wrong may be believed by others to be right. I learned to respect others’ beliefs and understand their point of view. My peers think differently from me, so it was nice to hear their ideas on certain topics and share my own with them. Coming into the program, I thought it would be a very slow “venture”. I was wrong and things went by quickly. One thing that I take away with me is how punctual the HCE summer program staffs are. They came in every day and although we participants were dull in the mornings, the staff always brought in great energy which encouraged me to participate in activities. This shows me that my energy level can impact others.
