Parent- Student Orientation 2022-2023
The Bronx High School for Medical Science is a middle-high school with 475 students from grade 6 through grade 12. The school opened in September 2002 to fill the need for a school featuring a medical science program in the Bronx. The school is one of seven schools at the William Howard Taft Educational Campus. Although originally founded as a high school, the school expanded its services to middle school under the umbrella of the Dr. Mary E. Walker Medical Science Academy in September 2005. Currently, the school’s demographics demonstrate a population comprising of 64% Hispanic, 25% Black, 6% Asian, and 2% White students. The student body includes 16% English language learners and 23% special education students. Boys account for 46% of the students enrolled and girls account for 54%. Reflective of the vibrant neighborhood of Morrisania it calls home, the Bronx High School for Medical Science serves students primarily from the Caribbean Islands (mainly the Dominican Republic), Central America, and Africa.
Since its inception, the Bronx High for Medical Science has enjoyed many measures of academic success. For over 19 years it has been classified as a school 'in good standing' by the state, earned acclaim for graduation rates that are at minimum 30 points above city average and is consistently rated a top school by national rankings such as US News and World Reports. In the high school all students have post-secondary placement, one quarter earn College Now credit and half with professional internship experience in institutions such as Jewish Home Hospital. In the middle school 93% meet standards in state assessments and have a cumulative attendance rate above 94%. Upon review of these academic measures and many more, it is clear that Bronx High School for Medical Science has met and in many areas exceeded the benchmarks for academic success.

The mission of the Bronx High School for Medical Science is to be an interconnected teaching and learning community that makes a collective impact on the world by embracing collaboration, cultural consciousness, and access for all, in order to empower all students to learn and lead in the medical science professions.
All staff at the Bronx High School for Medical Science are committed to equipping every student with the problem solving, critical thinking and personal awareness skills they need for 21st century careers in the medical science professions so they can positively contribute to the health and wellbeing of their communities.
